Jessica O. Matthews, original inventor of the Soccket ball

The origin

Jessica O. Matthews, then a Harvard student, co-created the original SOCCKET as part of a class project. The idea was straightforward: capture kinetic energy from play and convert it into usable electricity.

Story image

Addressing Energy Access

The project was driven by a real need: many communities lacked reliable electricity. SOCCKET was designed to store energy from play and provide small, usable power—especially for lighting.

Story image

Global Attention

The concept gained international media coverage and support from prominent public figures, athletes, and investors. It became a widely recognized example of purpose-driven product innovation.

Story image

a strategic pause

Scaling an energy-generating sports product brought real manufacturing and cost challenges, and SOCCKET’s market presence declined. The mission continued through Uncharted Power, where Jessica O. Matthews focused on larger distributed energy systems.

the power is back on in 2026

Life Is Better Outside, a subsidiary of Hape International, acquires the energy-generating play business and reintroduced the concept as PowerOn — with updated engineering, refined positioning, and a renewed focus on large-scale impact through small-scale power.

FAQs

There are a few key differences between the original SOCCKET and the PowerOn ball:

  1. The SOCCKET was a solid foam construction, while the PowerOn is inflatable air-filled
  2. While the SOCCKET could provide illumination through an attached lamp, the PowerOn also has an integrated LED array to light the ball from within.
  3. The SOCCKET used an audio-jack type connector for it's power output, while the PowerOn uses the universally compliant USB-C connection
  4. What remains the same is the innovative power-harvesting core, which stays true to the SOCCKET's patented original innovations.

For every 10 balls purchased around the world, we will donate one ball to a community with limited power infrastructure. Through Hape's global distribution and impact partners who will be identified during the summer of 2026, we are able to get PowerOn balls into communities on every continent.
